Alex Leavitt and I will be presenting our paper "Even a monkey can understand fan activism: Political speech, artistic expression, and a public for the Japanese dojin community" at the Anime Expo 2012 Anime and Manga Studies Symposium. Our paper is part of the panel What Do Fans Do, Why, and How? at 7:30pm on Sunday, July 1 in 501.
The symposium is a dedicated track of academic programming that is an integral part of the schedule of Anime Expo, the largest convention for fans of Japanese popular culture in North America. I got here this afternoon and it's pretty awesome, though also a little overwhelming - attendance averages 45,000 people over four days. I hope to see some of you at the panel!
