I suppose that is the reason, but it annoys me that he never actually says, and even if he hadn't pseudonymed the village, no family is ever mentioned by name and almost none of them are talked about individually--it's all aggregated data. Really, I would be fine with whatever, except no explanation is given. And yes, Google Maps does make this easier--it would have been about 15 minutes with a decent atlas of Japan, prior to that.
