ahorbinski: My Marxist-feminist dialectic brings all the boys to the yard. (marxism + feminism --> posthumanism)
I have officially reached the point in my WisCon career where all or most of my fellow panelists are friends of mine. I can't wait to see everyone in Madison next month!

What Makes a Great Transformative Work?
Sat, 1:00–2:15 pm Room 629
Moderator: Sigrid Ellis; Wendy Bradley, Ariel Franklin-Hudson, Andrea Horbinski, Cat Meier
90% of everything is crud, but what about the rest? What makes a great fanfic, remix video, or mashup? Is it the writing/editing/technical skill of the creator? Do character and plot apply in the same way? Is there something special about the way transformative works engage with their source texts? Do we look for different things in explicitly transformative works than we do in "original" works? And, most importantly, how do you find the good stuff?

Fans Fix SF
Sat, 4:00–5:15 pm Conference 5
Moderator: Cat Meier; Ariel Franklin-Hudson, Andrea Horbinski, Jenny Nilsson, Gretchen T.

A lot of science fiction fails in any of dozens of different ways. Maybe the whole premise is deeply flawed, maybe the book is sexist or racist, maybe they killed off your favorite character, or maybe the writing or direction just never quite lived up to the promise of what it could have been. Instead of feeling powerless in the face of this, fans often "fix" things through fan fiction, vids, and other creative/transformative works. Let's talk about fix-its. Why do we make them? When is a work so flawed that a fix-up is needed? Are fix-its the best way of addressing problems in SF? How do they change our relationship with and perception of the original source?

Fairy Tales in Shoujo Anime & Manga
Sun, 2:30–3:45 pm Room 623
Moderator: Lisa Blauersouth; Andrea Horbinski, Jackie Lee, Megan, Kelly Peterson

Some works of shoujo anime or manga (works which are marketed to females 10 to 18 years old) incorporate fairy tales. What are your favorite anime or manga that use fairy tales, either Western or Japanese? Which ones take fairy tales and play with them to achieve narrative brilliance? Works such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, Princess Tutu, and Natsume Yujin-cho may be considered.
