Ed Sizemore was in the audience for Anime in Academia, and he liked it.
I kind of think all the panels at Otakon could do with expansion--compared to WisCon, at which I modded two panels this year, discussions at Otakon feel rushed. Perhaps panels could expand to 80 minutes and the passing time could be cut to 10 minutes? 75 minute panels, 15 minute passing time? The BCC and the Hilton are huge, of course, so changing the time allotments would inevitably lead to more late walk-ins, but Otakon is fully miked, so that wouldn't be a huge problem, I don't think. I'm not so sure about narrowing the Anime in Academia panel's focus, however; I kind of think that would narrow its appeal.
Anyway. To round out my Otakon experience, I made it to the AMV Contest, the Maskerade musical performance by Yoshiki and Sugizo, the Homemade Kazoku concert and the latter half of Mike Knoll's Dubs That Time Forgot panels. Quite enjoyable all around, but I definitely felt that there were more interesting panels last year--or at least, a lot more that I was intent on attending. But I'm sure that it's cyclical, and subjective.
The traffic was even worse heading up I-95 than it had been on the way down, which I'm not sure i would have thought possible. It's enough to almost make me glad that I probably won't be able to attend Otakon next year--almost, but not quite. Otakon was my first con and is still as much of a home con as I have, and I always have a great time attending.
Next up: Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits in Minneapolis!
