I'm pretty sure that uchi is in the dictionary as a reading for 家, but it has to be a metonym originally. And in conversation when people say uchi they could mean either.

This is part of an ongoing conversation with some of my friends in the China subfield who can't deal with the irregularity of pronouncing kanji.
