I think I know what you mean about the carpetbagging, a bit, if only I hear it from friends -- I'm lucky in that my two core subjects (English and media studies) are somewhat progressive in their approaches [at least at my university]; but especially people doing German studies are struggling with outmoded approaches/worldviews. Feeling like a half-stranger in your own discipline. (like I know a couple of people doing fan studies theses in German, and it's a seriously hard sell at conservative faculties.)
