Oh, not at all! I know shamefully little about Korea in the second half of the Joseon period, but infanticide as a normal practice is by no means limited to Korea and Japan in this era. (Exposing babies was clearly pretty normal in the ancient Mediterranean, just from the literary sources, for instance.) And I think you make a good point about the denigration of folk/oral traditions and knowledge by scholars.
